The Best Way To Help Your Child Study

Many parents of children with ADHD struggle to find effective study strategies. While traditional methods like note-taking and flashcards may seem helpful, they often fall short. The secret to success lies in active studying, which involves teaching the material to someone else. When your child explains concepts to someone else, they are forced to process the information in a deeper way, strengthening their comprehension. This active recall process is a powerful tool for improving retention and understanding.

Creating an Effective Active Studying Environment

To maximize the benefits of active studying:

  • Find a Study Buddy: Encourage your child to teach the material to a friend, sibling, or even a grandparent. This can make studying more engaging and enjoyable.
  • Embrace the Role of Student: Let your child take the lead and teach you the material. Ask questions to clarify their understanding and provide feedback.
  • Avoid Critiques: Focus on listening and understanding. Avoid interrupting or offering corrections, as this can hinder the learning process.

If your child initially resists the idea of teaching someone else, gently encourage them to try it. Explain the benefits of active studying and offer support and guidance along the way. Remember, it's important to create a positive and supportive learning environment.

The Benefits of Active Studying

Active studying can have a profound impact on your child's academic performance and overall development. In addition to improving comprehension and retention, active studying can also:

  • Boost confidence: Teaching others can boost your child's self-esteem and confidence in their abilities.
  • Enhance communication skills: Active studying requires clear and effective communication, which can improve your child's social skills.
  • Develop critical thinking skills: Explaining concepts to others forces your child to analyze and synthesize information, strengthening their critical thinking abilities

Active studying is just one strategy to support your child with ADHD. Combine this approach with other effective techniques, such as creating a conducive study environment, breaking down tasks into smaller steps, and using visual aids.  Start by encouraging your child to teach you a subject they've recently learned. With practice and support, your child will develop the skills necessary to become an active and successful learner.
